Laura and Andrew's visit March 2014

It has become a tradition for someone in my family to visit each year... My first year here, Dad came in January. Last year, Mom, Granny, Papa, Aunt Candy, and Uncle Ron came to visit. This year, the two triplets were supposed to come with their significant others. However, because of pregnancy, work, and whatever else, Hannah and Shane didn't make it.

Laura and Andrew got here on March 20th. My favorite pilot of all time flew them in, took care of them, and introduced them to Bush Alaska flying. I picked them up at the airport for a mini tour of Alakanuk before coming back to school.

It was highly entertaining watching people call Laura Sammy as we walked through the hallway. The looks of confusion and then the smiles when I explained made my whole week. The kids loved meeting Laura and Andrew-just like they loved the rest of the family on their visits.

Over the course of their stay, we played in a basketball tournament, practiced city league in the evenings, I graded and did report cards, we visited Emo, walked to the cafe, and checked net with some friends. Laura attempted to make dirt cake, but I didn't have the right kind of pudding or milk, so it wasn't perfect, but the kids at school still devoured it.

The highlight of my time with Laura and Andrew here was coming home to clean dishes, folded laundry, and Andrew vacuuming. HA!! I kid, that was really nice, but it was even more fun to show my sister and Andrew my life here in Alakanuk. Now they understand my love for this village and the people who have become good friends and family.

Here are a few pictures... I'll do a separate blog about checking net soon.
Their first look at AUK.

Thanks Mike!

It's good to have good friends.

Some of us just never grow up...

Off to Emo!

Thanks Jim and Debbie for letting us
borrow your machine. :) Laura and Andrew on the river
just outside the AUK slough. Headed to EMO.

Big experience... Shopping at AC.

Taking a walk Saturday afternoon--power out so I couldn't
do report cards. BEAUTIFUL, warm weather. :)

Who says he's worthless... I was fine with him cleaning. :)

Happy birthday!

Checking oil... Nobody wants a blown piston.

Getting ready to check net on Sunday with
Greg, Aggie, and Donovan.

CRAYON!

Our "Where in the world is Lake County Examiner?" picture to submit.

Sisters at the dock.

This about sums up our friendship...

Maxine brought over some native foods for them to try.

Last night together, so much laughter.

He's a baller!

Laura's injuries from the tournament... But all worth it.
She got all star and the team gave her the 3rd place trophy to
take come as a souvenier. :)

We all know Laura is good at spoiling kids... No different for
my 17 munchkins.... Puzzles, pencils, balloons, whisles, erasers, candy...

This seemed to happen quite frequently...

Dinner at the cafe. Visiting with a teacher and her husband
who came over from Emo to have dinner.

It was a great trip!!! I am looking forward to their next visit. They are talking about coming back in the fall time so we can go out boating and looking for moose. Start saving those pennies and airmiles, guys! :)

I've got extra beds, plenty of food, and would LOVE to have folks come visit. Just let me know when you're up for an Alakanuk adventure!

SJ

P.S. Most of these pictures were taken by Laura, but in my impatience, she wasn't able to edit them... I think they look great as is, wouldn't you agree? :)

Celebrations!

Holy! A whole month has passed since I last updated... It was a BUSY March. My last blog post was the night before my birthday and included my big decision to stay in AUK.

Here are a few pictures from that snow machine ride to Scammon Bay that I mentioned... It was a beautiful day, but the trail didn't have much snow. By the time we got home LATE Friday night, my muscles were screaming at me...
Kuzi in the background.

My travelling partners: Donovan, Mikey, Buck, and Rena.

No fresh snow; really hard, icy trail.

Let's GO BRAVES!!!! Proud of you boys!

Superfan!
On my birthday everyone was gone... Theresa was travelling for science fair. Greg, Gregory, and Kaneisha were travelling for basketball. Aggie and Shane were still in Anchorage close to the hospital. So, rather than cooking myself birthday dinner, I got dressed up, fueled up, and followed a friend to Kotlik to watch our junior high basketball teams compete in the district tournament. Again, we didn't get any snow, so the trail was all icy and rough. HOWEVER, it was also another beautiful day for a ride. It was my first trip to Kotlik by snow machine. Our kids were successful, had a great weekend, and again I was proud to say I'm a brave. :)

Because, who DOESN'T skip warm up so they can do cake walk...
I love these kids.
The next week of March was full of the same general frustrations of me procrastinating all my grading and report cards to the last minute... We are getting more hours of daylight, more sunshine, but not enough snow... I'm hopeful that snow will come because my snow machine is barely over 3100 miles, and thats a mere 500 miles this season. LAME!

The next post will be about Laura and Andrew's visit. As always, here's to a spectacular week--hopefully something fun and exciting that I can share with you all.

Decisions...

When I think back to the May of 2011, when I got the phone call from LYSD for the initial interview then job offer, I remember being SCARED. All my life I'd lived in Oregon, within driving distance of my entire family. Sure, it was 6 hours home from La Grande, but only a few hours either direction on I84 to a sister. Then living in Medford, I was blessed with the best roommates ever, my auntie and uncle. So, imagine my fear when, after a SHORT pause, I agreed to sign a contract and move to a remote Alaskan village called Alakanuk (which I tried to write out phonetically so I'd remember how to say it...) After some overwhelming tears on the roomies' couch, a celebratory dinner, phone calls to the parents, grandparents and those I consider my role models and mentors, it began to sink in what I had just done.

I'll admit that there were many times that summer that I thought about calling and backing out of the contract, but continued encouragement and support helped me to make the move to Alakanuk. I have said MANY times over the past 3 years that it is the best move I've ever made. I've posted repeatedly how grateful I am to those who encouraged me to give it a shot, even if just for a year.

Over the past 3 years, I really feel like I've become part of the community. Each month I live here I meet someone new and make connections of who is related to who. I am happy to say I know the first and last names of every student K-8, and the vast majority of the high school. I know parents' and grandparents. I have built relationships with most of the kids as I talk to them about hunting, snow machining, and basketball or by being goofy.

This year has been a very difficult year for me professionally. I feel as if I have been constantly held back from my full potential, being told I am unable to attend/participate in a variety of activities and professional development opportunities. Each time I am told no I go through a conversation with myself trying to decide if I am just bitter and being a baby about being told no, or if it is more.

Up until Christmas break, when asked how long I was going to live around here, I was telling people that I planned to retire from LYSD, and more specifically Alakanuk. However, after some extremely frustrating and trying conversations and events, I was doubting my decision to stay here. I spent many hours crying and praying for an answer as to what I should do next year. I consulted my family and some respected friends/coworkers/peers. I have gathered opinions, listed (only in my head, too lazy to write them out) pros and cons, and thought long and hard about what to do.

Contracts were handed out mid-February. I lost mine on my desk for a while, but found it after getting home from ASTE. I have to say there were a few things that swayed me greatly.

The first, and perhaps most influential, is the reaction I saw when I got home from ASTE on Thursday. I was met by concerned faces of students and staff as they wondered if I'd been sick and why I'd been gone so long. The bear hugs, "I missed you!" and "I love you!"s warmed my heart and was a huge check in the "stay right where you are" column. Second, I have some phenomenal coworkers in Lower Yukon School District. Attending ASTE with a few of them and seeing how they are changing the lives of their students for the better every day, inspired me to be better for my kids here in AUK. It completely reenergized me and ignited a fire within me to make a bigger difference for my students here. Third, on Friday I was able to snow machine over to Scammon Bay to watch our boys play in the championship game for our region. A parent told me that the last time AUK was in the championships was in 1988 (good year, eh?) and it was in our home gym. (Some of you may remember that we were supposed to host the regional tournament this year, but our new school still isn't done and our principal as well as district staff postponed until next year when our site is more able to handle the extra bodies in the building.) As I watched our boys play their hearts out I felt so proud. I was proud of each individual player for his effort to fight through the poor calls, the fatigue, the frustration. I was proud of their teamwork. I was proud of the coach for rising above the poor calls, encouraging his players, and showing what it means to be a Brave. I was proud to be part of the positive crowd. I am pleased to say I did not notice a single AUK fan cheering against the Scammon players, everyone was simply cheering FOR our team. For the 2 1/2 hour ride home Friday night, I continued to pray. I thanked God for the positive people around me, for the community He has placed me in, for the experiences and friendships I've gained. I also thought about my family, both in lower 48 and here. I weighed moving into the interior or even south, as compared to staying here.

At the end of the weekend, after a few more conversations, I decided to sign my contract. I scanned and emailed it today, and placed the hard copy in site mail. As of now, I'm staying in AUK. However, I suppose I could have the option of a transfer if things get too bad here.

I truly am grateful to all of you who listened to me, sometimes through tears, as I considered my options. Thank you to those of you who have inspired me to be a better teacher, a better role model, a better person. Thank you for the encouragement, words of wisdom, and different perspectives to each situation.

Here's to another year of learning, teaching, and being involved in the community. Here's to a year of positivity, keeping my head down to get things done, but keeping my chin up. A year of more adventures, more laughter, more fun. Here's to year 4 in Alakanuk!

First ski doo trip of the year...

You know, it is REALLY depressing to say that the FIRST trip I took this year was on February 8th... It has been such a crazy year weather wise... But, at any rate, Friday night at ball games Bummer asked if I'd want to go along as he went out to set some traps. Obviously I said yes...

It was a GORGEOUS day. I didn't take many pictures, but I definitely had fun playing around in the snow... The snow was really dry so it didn't pack well. There was ice below the 2ish inches. So as I drove, I stuck my toe out to make an additional track, or I'd watch how the snow flew up off the skis... I also enjoyed sliding on the ice...

After Nathan set his 4th trap, he decided to play a little on the ice too... He took off on an intentional slide, hit a ledge and turned his ski doo over on the side. He was fine, the machine was fine. I helped him turn it back upright and off we went to catch up with Bummer. :)

All in all, it was a fantastic way to spend my Saturday afternoon. I was hoping for more pictures, but the phone shut down because it got cold... Here are a few!

Praise God for the beauty of this place.

Girl's gotta have her guns! New 20 gauge on the left, trusty 22 on the right. :)

Praying for many more days of more snow, beautiful weather, and time to play. :)

December and January

WHOA! Just opened my blogger and noticed my last post was Dec. 3rd... Oops! So a lot has happened since Thanksgiving break... My students recited a few snowman poems for the Christmas program... I attended Misfit Christmas with some great friends in Anchorage. I got to watch my brothers play basketball and win not only the first place trophy for the old guy league, but also the sportsmanship trophy. School started back up and I was so excited to be back with my students! January has flown buy... It was a month full of illnesses--teaching while sick, having nearly 50% attendance for a few days, etc.

We haven't had much snow. It's been a really weird winter here. We've had a ton of rain and freezing rain. Every time I get excited about an inch of snow falling, a day or two later comes the rain. I've fallen a few times this winter, but overall the knee seems to be doing just fine.

We have hosted junior high basketball games, high school boys basketball, and this weekend high school girls basketball. I absolutely love the chance to watch our kids play. It is fun to hang out with the community, cheer on our kids, and make memories. In class, we've been working hard in reading more complex texts and we're really coming along with our addition and subtraction skills. I'm so proud of the kids!

Last week we celebrated 100 days of school. The kids were excited for jello, popcorn (they counted 100 kernels) and celebrating how much smarter they've become in just 100 school days.

Here are some pictures from the past 2 months. :)

Thanksgiving break 2013

It always amazes me how I go into a long weekend thinking, "Man, I've got 4 1/2 days to get this pile of stuff done, no big deal. By Sunday, I'll be done with everything and can relax..." Well, Wednesday afternoon is wasted by sleeping/being lazy from being so worn out all week... Then Thursday is Thanksgiving, so its spent skyping family, cooking, and enjoying the company of family and friends. Friday is a day of sleeping in and basketball games. As is Saturday. Then, lo and behold, Sunday rolls around and Sammy Jo hasn't even STARTED her homework, grading, planning, or cleaning...

Story of my life. Every. Darn. Weekend...

However, it was a much needed long weekend. I missed my students, of course, but it was nice to catch up on sleep and enjoy the company of some fabulous people in the community. :)

I was invited to spend Thanksgiving with my Alakanuk family, the Ayuneraks. I made 2 pumpkin pies the morning of Thanksgiving (which the family doubted my ability to get finished in time), along with a green bean casserole (missed you Amy and Aunt Susan!), and some mashed potatoes. I must admit, I didn't have time to shower, but it was okay... The hair was straight from the day before and I threw on some deodorant. :)

Thanksgiving dinner was very similar to what my family has done for years. :) Turkey and yummy side dishes... Lots of laughter and visiting... A few kids running around. Plenty of fun to warm my heart and make me feel a little less homesick for my family. Around 5 I headed to the gym to join my fellow staff members for potluck. :) It was fun to watch my coworkers' children play and just relax a little. Dinner was in the gym then the staff had some volleyball fun. However, I skipped volleyball and instead headed to TC for eskimo dance. I didn't stay long as I was with other teachers who were tired... My intent was to go home and sleep after eskimo dance, but instead I went up to the gym for a short time to watch city league play ball... Then off to Greg and Aggie's for a visit. :) After some ball in the boys' room, some akutaq (I might  have spelled it wrong, sorry!) and juice, I headed home around 11:30...

All in all Thanksgiving was a great day. I am so grateful for friends and family in so many places. :)

Here are a few random pictures... Until next time!

Pendleton, OR?! All the way in Alakanuk, AK?!! Couldn't believe it!

The beginning miles on season 3... Not enough snow for me to go far, but apparently
the trail to Emo is passable,  just rough in a few places.

My hair stylists. :)

For family pictures...

For family pictures. Because who doesn't want a picture by the
above ground water/sewer pipes?! :)

SO thankful for all I've been blessed with, from awesome family and friends, to a great job
in a wonderful community, to my utter badass attitude. Here's to a FANTASTIC holiday season and a fabulous 2014. :)
